Biden ‘Dated Himself,’ ‘Underperformed’—and ‘Was Eaten Alive’

According to our experts, Bernie Sanders was eclipsed, Joe Biden (maybe) survived a pummeling, and Kamala Harris changed the 2020 race. It’s a democratic-socialist party now—but it might be in the hands of some younger stars instead of Bernie Sanders. After two nights and 20 Democrats scrapping on a national stage, that’s the conclusion of our panel of experts, operatives and longtime political observers who sat through all four hours of debating and watched a party reshape itself on live TV. Who came out ahead? Kamala Harris captured a lot of the attention, not least for her ability to go toe-to-toe with frontrunner Joe Biden on Thursday night. The other big winner was Pete Buttigieg, whose smooth intelligence and moral seriousness stood out, though at age 37 he might not have had quite the commanding presence of Harris. Both of them, in our experts’ views, eclipsed Biden—though the former vice president st...

Poland Spring pledges to use entirely recycled plastic bottles

Amid growing concern about the harmful effects of plastic on the world’s oceans, Nestle’s Poland Spring has announced that it’s transitioning toward the use of 100 percent recycled plastic bottles. The company said it plans to use recycled plastic bottles across 25 percent of its entire product portfolio by 2021. By 2025, it’s aiming to increase that percentage to 50 percent. The brand’s push to begin using more recycled materials starts this month with its one-liter bottles of non-carbonated water, which will now be made using 100 percent rPET (recycled plastic). Earlier this year, Poland Spring launched Poland Spring Origin. The 900ml bottles are also made of 100 percent recycled plastic. “As a company, we’ve already put our stake in the ground when it comes to taking the ‘single’ out of ‘single-use’ plastic bottles,” says Fernando Mercé, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Waters North America. “As we begin to transform Poland Spring, our most iconic brand, to 100% recycled plastic packaging, we will begin to bring this commitment to life for our consumers in a tangible way. Bottles like these, which are made from 1...

Thyssenkrupp workers demand clear strategy for steel unit

DUISBURG, Germany (Reuters) – Powerful labour leaders at Thyssenkrupp have called on the group’s management to come up with a clear strategy for its steel unit, which will remain part of the conglomerate after a failed attempt to merge it with Tata Steel. “We’re core business now. That requires the need for investments,” Tekin Nasikkol, head of the works council of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, told journalists. “We reject pure restructuring plans and tough cost cut programmes.” Thyssenkrupp’s steel unit has come under pressure due to falling prices and high raw material costs and faces 2,000 job cuts, the same level of layoffs that would have been carried out under the previous merger plans with Tata Steel. 18 Awg Tinned Copper Wire Manufacturers Cheap Price Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe’s second-quarter adjusted operating profit plunged 81% to 37 million euros ($42.05 million). The elevators-to-submarines group last month scrapped the joint venture plan after it became apparent that the European Commission would block it, causing a u-turn in strategy. Thyssenkrupp now expects to keep a majority in the business in the long-term. C...

How the World’s First Digital Circuit Breaker Could Completely Change Our Powered World PM_Logo PM_Logo

3,000 times faster than the fastest mechanical breaker, this innovation could radically alter how we manage power. This week the world’s first and only digital circuit breaker was certified for commercial use. The technology, invented by Atom Power, has been listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the global standard for consumer safety. This new breaker makes power easier to manage and 3000 times faster than the fastest mechanical breaker, marking one of the most radical advancements in power distribution since Thomas Edison, next to Nikola Tesla. Picture the fuse box in your basement, each switch assigned to different electrical components of your home. These switches are designed to break a circuit to prevent the overloaded wires in your wall from overheating and causing a fire. When this happens, you plod down to your mechanical room and flick the switches on again. Now multiply that simple system in your home to city high rises and industrial buildings, which might have 250 circuit breakers on any given floor, each one ranging from 15 to 4000 amps at higher voltages. At this scale, the limitations and dangers of a manually controlled power system become much more evident—...

Lego Wants to Completely Remake Its Toy Bricks (Without Anyone Noticing)

BILLUND, Denmark — At the heart of this town lies a building that is a veritable temple to the area’s most famous creation, the humble Lego brick. It is filled with complex creations, from a 50-foot tree to a collection of multicolored dinosaurs, all of them built with a product that has barely changed in more than 50 years. A short walk away in its research lab, though, Lego is trying to refashion the product it is best known for: It wants to eliminate its dependence on petroleum-based plastics, and build its toys entirely from plant-based or recycled materials by 2030. The challenge is designing blocks that click together yet separate easily, retain bright colors, and survive the rigors of being put through a laundry load, or the weight of an unknowing parent’s foot. In essence, the company wants to switch the ingredients, but keep the product exactly the same. “We need to learn again how to do this,” said Henrik Ostergaard Nielsen, a production supervisor at Lego’s factory here in Billund. Consumers worldwide have voiced growing alarm about the impact of plastic waste on the environment, and increasing numbers of companies are trying to use packaging materials that are recyc...

Advanced Manufacturing Media is a leading source for news and in-depth technical information about advanced manufacturing

Advanced Manufacturing Media is a leading source for news and in-depth technical information about advanced manufacturing in North America. Next-generation CNC machines combine traditional machining with laser cutting, welding, and additive manufacturing. Metalworking machines are fast, powerful, and accurate, but they weren’t always as capable as they are today. Modern equipment is more nimble, flexible and adaptable. The machines collectively exceed the sum of their parts. They feature live tooling, multiple spindles, tool turrets, and multiaxis capabilities. They turn and mill, drill and tap, bore and ream and they do so repeatedly, quickly and efficiently. They have evolved. They continue to evolve. Adding laser technology is just the latest of these evolutionary trends. Known by some as multitasking machines, and by others as hybrid machines, these devices feature laser technology, traditional metalworking equipment, and sometimes additive manufacturing in one. They can mill metal by traditional means and then laser cut, laser weld, perform repairs, and clad materials. One machine can do the work of many. One clamping means more process predictability. It may help lower co...

Edge computing, the cloud and digital twins were among the dominant themes at this year’s Hannover

Edge computing, the cloud and digital twins were among the dominant themes at this year’s Hannover Fair, the world’s largest industrial exhibition. But despite the show being bigger than ever with the addition of the CeMat logistics show, visitor numbers dipped slightly. Have we hit “peak Hannover”? This year’s edition of the world’s largest industrial trade show attracted 210,000 visitors – down from the 225,000 who attended the 2017 event, despite the biennial CeMat logistics show running alongside the Fair for the first time, and the presence of the now-annual MDA (Motion, Drives & Automation) show-within-a-show, which was not held in 2017. Despite these statistics, you would be hard-pressed to notice any easing of the crowds at the fairground. Visitors had a choice of 5,800 exhibitors to see in almost 30 vast halls. About 30% of the visitors were from outside Germany with China sending the largest delegation (around 6,500 people), followed by the Netherlands (5,300), Poland (2,700) and the US (1,700). As in recent years, Industry 4.0, digitisation and the cloud were omnipresent themes, but one area where there was a noticeable amount of activity in 2018 was edge computi...

How To Stop Listening To Others, Start Evaluating Your Job And Take Control Of Your Career

We’re all constantly judged and evaluated. When we were young, our parents had strict rules that the kids had to abide by and approval or displeasure was dished out, according to our behavior. In school, teachers grade everything you do. At work, the boss gives his or her annual performance review, as well as daily reminders of how our work product is meeting, failing or exceeding expectations. Random people judge our clothes, manner of speech, political views, homes, cars, weight and sexual preference.  The surprising thing is that we don’t take the time to honestly evaluate ourselves. To get ahead in your career, I suggest that you tune out everyone else’s opinions and standards and start evaluating yourself. Take some time everyday to critically think about your career. Broadly speaking, you want to figure out if you are heading in the right direction, continually learning and being intellectually challenged, earning the most you can and contributing value and feeling a sense of purpose. Here are some straightforward questions you can think about to critically evaluate yourself. These are just a small sampling of questions you could pose to yourself to get starte...
