Your computer is an important energy consumer in your home. Can you save energy when using

Your computer is an important energy consumer in your home. Can you save energy when using it? This article offers a few tips. You only know how much electricity you use if you have a way to measure it. And only if you measure it can you minimize its use. A voltmeter gives you this ability. You can buy one for only $25 US at Amazon. You plug the voltmeter into the wall socket, then plug the device you want to measure into the voltmeter. To measure how much electricity all your computer equipment uses, plug it all into a power strip, and plug the power strip into the voltmeter. If you’re like me, when you get your new voltmeter you’ll run around the house and measure the power consumption of everything in sight. You’ll quickly find ways to minimize your use of electricity, powering off some appliances and using others less. With your computer you’ll discover: It’s tough to generalize about computer power consumption because it varies so widely. (That’s why you bought the voltmeter!) Most desktop computer systems consume between 70 and 200 watts while in use, while laptops often burn between 15 and 60 watts. Both figures include typical LCD displays. View this power consumption ch...

VW’s ID Space Vizzion electric concept car doesn’t have door handles

The Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion electric concept car can go up to 300 miles on a single charge, boasts an impressive aerodynamic build, and is made with recycled materials — but don’t look for something as basic as a door handle on the compact SUV-sized vehicle. The Space Vizzion is the seventh ID concept car showing what VW can do with an electric fleet as it adds more all-electric vehicles to its line-up. VW plans to add up to 20 electric vehicles on its battery platform (known as MEB, or “modular electric drive matrix”) by 2025. A production-ready version of the car is expected in the U.S. by 2022. The original Vizzion concept car was first shown in 2018 as a sleek, low-riding, self-driving sedan, and the latest concept station wagon/super small SUV was revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show Tuesday night. In the newest edition — with “Space” tacked onto the name since it’s a more spacious vehicle — it’s a similar vibe to other electric SUVs like the Audi E-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and the recently revealed Ford Mustang Mach-E. But features like touch-activated surfaces instead of door handles mean you touch the car, wait for a light to pu...

How Nyansa Enables Long Overdue Management Tool Consolidation

eWEEK PRODUCT ANALYSIS: Rich data plus AIOps enables businesses to rationalize the number of management tools. Network management startup Nyansa has announced an update to its Voyance AIOps platform that is designed to reduce the number of monitoring tools being used through tool consolidation. To accomplish this, Nyansa has beefed up Voyance to include feature rich monitoring of the wired network. Already strong with wireless LAN, Voyance now includes support for Cisco, HPE/Aruba, Alcatel Lucent Enterprise and Juniper Networks wired switches. Customers can use Voyance as compliment to, or a replacement for, tools such as SolarWinds, Cisco Prime or Aruba Airwave, because the Nynasa platform now includes the following capabilities: Management tool sprawl has been the bane of almost every network manager’s existence as long as I can remember. Every vendor promises a “single pane of glass,” but as networks evolve, new tools are required. Also, some tools, like SolarWinds, do an effective job of showing high-level information but do not have the capabilities to look at advanced network information. #responsive_asset { border-bottom: none !important; } #middleBorder{ border:#2b...

Sony PS-LX310BT Turntable Review: Stylish, Bluetooth, Automatic, Affordable

When it comes to entry level turntables, there are usually a series of compromises made by manufacturers. To keep costs down, they tend to have basic functionality — the biggest “extra” feature is typically a built-in preamplifier since buyers don’t usually own stereo amps or receivers with a PHONO input. They often appear to be cheaply made, with plastic pretty much everywhere, and not a whole lot of attention paid to visual style. All this is fine for occasional record listeners, or those first dipping their toes into vinyl, but it does make for an experience that often leaves buyers wishing for a little more. Sony has done a great job of upending the entry level turntable market with the new PS-LX310BT. Introduced at CES 2019 for $199.99 it’s now listed on Sony’s website for $179.99 which makes it an even better value.   I’ve assembled a number of sub $200 turntables and the story is usually the same: plastic and lots of it. The PS-LX310BT follows that formula, which is hard to avoid when you’re selling a turntable for under $200. However, in this case two key components are made from aluminum: the platter and the tone arm.  Speaking of assembly, it’s a quick job with this tw...

For the gym, it comes with a waterproof shoe pouch, waterproof wet clothes pouch, has a moisture wicking mesh back and waterproof antimicrobial interior lining. And from the gym to the office, there are three ways to carry it: You can wear it like a b...

With great tooling comes a great product. Tooling, which is a mold, tool, jig, pattern or part used to make different things, is important in manufacturing as its quality also dictates the quality of the end product. Sourcing the right tooling is easy even for a new buyer if he or she knows what to check or consider before buying in bulk. Here’s a quick guide, three key things importers should keep in mind, when purchasing the most common tooling, such as molds and parts: • Smaller size not a good compromise for price – Price is almost always a factor in choosing tooling and any other product. As many tooling like molds and parts are custom-made, price will depend on specifications. Some buyers tend to cut costs by making the mold or part smaller but this is not advisable, as some mold specialists such as Aco Mold say. A smaller mold base size has lesser mold strength and stability versus standard or bigger ones. • Materials equals performance – In sourcing tooling, importers usually encounter a broad range o...

ProdataKey Releases Mobile App for Cloud Access Control Platform

ProdataKey’s new Touch app lets authorized users unlock entrances remotely via their smartphone, eliminating the need for carrying a physical credential. DRAPER, Utah — ProdataKey (PDK), a provider of networked Cloud-based access control products and services, announces the release of its Touch app for Apple and Android devices. The Touch app is available for free to all PDK customers and allows users to unlock entrances remotely with the push of a button on the mobile app. Only entryways matching the user’s permission level will be available to unlock. The Touch app is compatible with all pdk io systems and all doorways, regardless of the type of readers in place, according to the company. To begin making use of this new functionality, system administrators must enable the feature within the software, which now appears as a clickable option within the management dashboard. In addition, the administrator must indicate which individual users are authorized to use the app. This allows employers to limit use of the app to certain employees, if desired, such as those at a managerial level or above. Once these two steps occur, authorized users will automatically receive an email from...

How Man’s Best Friend Could One Day Trigger Alarms and Emergency Alerts

Georgia Institute of Technology is training dogs to communicate using wearable devices that can activate personal response systems (PERS) and other alarms. Dogs in one FIDO project study were trained to use simple interfaces attached to their vest that required a bite, tug or poke with their nose. Melody Jackson, founder and director of the FIDO project at the Georgia Institute of Technology, can well envision a time when man’s best friend could play a life-saving role as part of an emergency alert device system. Jackson, who has a doctorate in computer science, leads a team of fellow scientists at Georgia Tech with the main goal of facilitating interactions for dogs with occupations — a project abbreviated as FIDO in a nod to its pawed participants that might soon be able to communicate more clearly with humans thanks to the technology being developed by Jackson’s lab. The team’s research includes the testing of wearable devices for dogs, a dog-friendly in-home touchscreen panel and a way to interpret what’s being communicated by a dog’s different barks. The findings from these studies could open a world of possibilities for the way dogs and humans interact, including in secur...
